Types of Devices for pediatric MCS

  • Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP): IABP assists the heart indirectly by decreasing the afterload and augments diastolic aortic pressure with subsequent enhancement in diastolic blood flow resulting in better perfusion of the coronary blood flow. The intra-aortic balloon inflates during diastole synchronously with aortic valve closure. Not extensive use in children
  • Impellais placed through a peripheral artery, from which it pumps blood to the left or right heart via the ascending aorta or pulmonary artery.
  • Extracorporeal (ECMO): not really a LVAD but it uses to stabilize the patient and in cases with lungs function affected.
  • Ventricular Assist Device (VAD):
    • Paracorporeal: Centrimag / Pedimag (continuous flow, short-term surpport) or Berlin Heart (pulsatil flow, long-term support):

Berlin Heart

    • Implatable: different devices, Heart Mate III /Heart ware or Jarvik 2000

  • Total Artificial Heart (TAH): SynCardia 50cc temporary Total Artificial Heart (TAH) is a smaller version of the SynCardia 70cc TAH, which has been approved as a bridge to transplant for more than a decade. The 50cc TAH is designed for use as a bridge to transplant in adolescents.
